De Beer, Brun Named to All-MW Golf Team

May 10, 2012

FORT WORTH – Senior Johan de Beer and freshman Julien Brun were included among a group of 10 student-athletes named to the All-Mountain West Men’s Golf Team in a vote of the league’s eight coaches, the conference office announced Thursday. Brun was also named the league’s Freshman of the Year.

De Beer and Brun finished 1-2 at the MW Championship over the weekend in Tucson, Ariz., and have led the Horned Frogs to the NCAA Regional Championships for the 23rd straight season. The squad will compete May 17-19 in Ann Arbor, Mich., for the right to advance to next month’s NCAA Championship held at Rivera Golf Club in Los Angeles.

De Beer earned his fourth All-Mountain West honor, becoming the first four-time all-conference selection in TCU men’s golf history. Prior to this season, only one other golfer in the 13-year history of the MW had ever garnered the award four straight seasons (UNLV’s Ryan Moore). UNLV senior Derek Ernst joined de Beer in becoming a four-time selection this season.

A native of Pretoria, South Africa, de Beer has saved his best collegiate season for last, as he owns a career-best 71.75 stroke average and has posted seven top-10 finishes in 12 events. He won his first career individual Mountain West championship last weekend in Tucson to run his current streak of top-10 finishes to five consecutive tournaments. He owns current career-best national rankings of No. 39 according to Golfweek and No. 47 according to Golfstat.

Brun was selected as Mountain West Freshman of the Year after leading the conference in stroke average (70.67), top-5 finishes (six) and individual victories (three). He was one of 10 student-athletes, and the only Mountain West golfer, named as a semifinalist for The Ben Hogan Award presented annually to the top college golfer. Brun became the first TCU golfer to be named MW Freshman of the Year and is the third Frog freshman of the year ever, along with Colby Beckstrom (2003 C-USA) and J.J. Killeen (2002 C-USA).

Brun continued what has been the finest season by a TCU golfer to date last weekend by finishing runner-up to de Beer at the MW Championship. With three individual top-medalist honors, he has set TCU program records for victories in both a season a career, while he is on pace to shatter current PGA TOUR pro J.J. Henry’s school record for stroke average set in 1998 (71.08). Brun is currently ranked No. 3 in the nation according to Golfstat and No. 10 according to Golfweek. He is listed No. 16 in the R&A World Amateur Ranking system and is No. 1 among French amateurs and No. 3 among Europeans.
