Rebels Head To NCAA Regional Without Knight

LAS VEGAS (UNLVRebels.com) - The UNLV men's golf team, which has been ranked as high as No. 2 in the nation this season, will be heading to this week's NCAA Regional without head coach Dwaine Knight, because of a recent health procedure that will not allow him to travel. Assistant coach JC Deacon will lead the squad in action this Thursday-Saturday.

"I have full confidence in JC to lead our team at the NCAA Regional," Knight said. "I know our guys will respond and play well in Greensboro, N.C., to advance to the finals. It's been a very special season for this team and I am very proud of them."

Last week, Knight, who led the Rebels to the 1998 national title, underwent successful surgery to remove melanoma cancer from his foot.

"Because of early detection, I was able to have successful surgery," Knight said. "All margins are clear and we expect a full recovery, but because the surgery was so recent, I will not be able to travel with the team this week. My goal is to rejoin the team at the national finals at The Rivera Country Club in a couple of weeks."

UNLV has won five team titles and has recorded two second-place finishes in 11 events this year. The five team wins rank second in program history (also won five tournaments in 1998-99). The Rebels have also had four individuals win tournament crowns this season.
