FORT COLLINS, Colo. - Colorado State men's golf Head Coach Christian Newton announced Thursday the addition of Oklahoma State transfer Patrick Winther to the CSU roster for the 2013-14 season.
A native of Copenhagen, Denmark, Winther will begin his junior year with the Rams this fall. He redshirted his freshman year, competing in six tournaments as a sophomore and 11 this past season.
"I couldn't be happier that Patrick is joining our program," commented Newton. "This was a very unique situation, and this will ultimately be a great fit for both Patrick and Colorado State."
In two years competing for the Cowboys, he posted five top 20 finishes, including a career-best seventh place spot in the 2012 NCAA regional round. He shot a career-low round of 66 in that tournament, finishing with a career-low three-round score of 208 (-5).
"He was the No. 1 ranked junior in the class of 2010 and has competed at the highest level of amateur golf," added Newton. "His experience will prove invaluable for our program. I expect him to compete for our top spot immediately."
Winther was named a first-team AJGA all-American in 2009 after posting three top 10 finishes. He won the 2009 Polo Golf Junior Classic with rounds of 67 and 69. He also took home the title in the 2010 HP Boys Championship with a three-round score of 211 (70-70-71). He was a recipient of the Byron Nelson International Junior Golf Award in 2008.
Winther becomes the fourth member of Newton's inaugural signing class. He will join Jimmy Makloski, Alec Bone and Logan Iverson as the new faces on the Rams' 2013-14 roster.
