No. 9 Rebels To Play In Nicklaus Invitational

LAS VEGAS (UNLVRebels.com) - The No. 9 UNLV men's golf team will return to action next week as it competes at the 2012 Jack Nicklaus Invitational. The tournament, which is scheduled for Monday-Tuesday, Oct. 8-9, will be played at Muirfield Village Golf Club (par 72, 7,352 yards) in Dublin, Ohio.

The two-day, 54-hole stroke-play tournament hosted by Ohio State, will have two rounds (36 holes) on Monday with an 8:30 a.m. ET shotgun start, and will conclude with a final round of 18 holes on Tuesday with tee times off the first and 10th holes between 8-10:30 a.m. ET.

Competing for the Rebels will be juniors Blake Biddle and Nicholas Maruri, freshman AJ McInerney, senior Kevin Penner and freshman Zane Thomas.

The Rebels are coming off a tie for third place at the prestigious PING/Golfweek Preview just outside of Atlanta, Ga., which featured 14 (out of 15) teams that were ranked in the preseason top 25. UNLV finished tied for second in its only other tournament of the season - the Gene Miranda Invitational in Colorado Springs, Colo.

Penner has turned in UNLV's top individual finish of the year as he finished tied for second at the Preview. Biddle has also turned in a top-10 finish this season as he tied for sixth at the Miranda Invite.

The Nicklaus Invitational will have a field of 11 teams: Arkansas, BYU, Kent State, Kentucky, Ohio State, Oklahoma State, Purdue, San Diego, UCF, UNLV and Vanderbilt.

Texas won the 2011 Jack Nicklaus Invitational with a score of 2-under 862, while Illinois' Thomas Pieters won medalist honors at 7-under 209. The 2012 event marks just the third year of the tournament. Oklahoma State won the team title in the event's first year in 2010. This year will mark UNLV's first playing in the event.
