Lobo Men's Golf Team To Conclude Fall Season

The rankings are nice, but they're not going to help the University of New Mexico men's golf team win its next event. The Lobos have to do that the old-fashioned way - on the course.

UNM, No. 4 and No. 5 in the latest Golfstat.com and Golfweek.com/Sagarin polls, respectively, travel to Dallas for the Royal Oaks Invitational on Monday and Tuesday to conclude the fall season.

"It's good to be recognized in the rankings, but as far as getting ready for Dallas, it doesn't mean anything," Lobo head coach Glen Millican said. "Obviously, it means we've played well in our first four tournaments, but we have to go out and do it all over again."

The Lobos have been particularly sharp the last two weeks, finishing second to top-ranked California at the Isleworth Collegiate Invitational in Windermere, Fla. That comes on the heels of their impressive 29-stroke victory at their own William H. Tucker Intercollegiate on the UNM Championship Course on Sept. 28-29.

Dating to the start of the 2011 season, the Lobos have competed in 18 tournaments. They have finished in the top five in 15 of those.

In most of those 18 tournaments, UNM has put itself in position to compete for the team title entering the final round. But Millican has been encouraged during the last two events by the way the team has made a charge during the last round - particularly the final 18 holes.

"Finishing strong makes a good tournament great, and the last two tournaments, we've done a much better job of that," Millican said. "I don't know that we're doing anything different this year than last year. I just think our guys are a year older and a year better."

UNM will send the same five golfers that competed for the team event the last two weeks to Dallas - and all five of them participated in the Royal Oaks Invitational last season, when the Lobos finished fifth - 22 strokes behind winner Texas A&M. The Aggies are in the 14-team event again this year, along with eight other teams in the Golfweek.com/Sagarin top 50.

The Lobos playing at the event are: seniors Benjamin Bauch, John Catlin and James Erkenbeck and sophomores Gavin Green and Victor Perez. Sophomore Sean Romero will go and play as an individual.

Six players in Golfweek.com's individual top 50 are competing, including No. 1 Talor Gooch of Oklahoma State. Green checks in at No. 45.

Tee times on Monday are set for 8:30 a.m. with a shotgun start. Go to golfstat.com for live stats.
