Mountain West Announces Men's Golfer of the Month

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. - New Mexico senior James Erkenbeck has been selected Mountain West Men's Golfer of the Month for October. This is his second career golfer of the month award and first since his freshman season.

In his first tournament of the month, Erkenbeck tied for second place at the Isleworth Collegiate Invitational in Windermere, Fla., on Oct. 21-23. He carded a 3-under-par 213 (72-70-71) on the par 72, 7,544-yard course and led New Mexico to a second-place team finish, two strokes back of tournament winner and top-ranked California. Erkenbeck finished the 54-hole event with 10 birdies and an eagle. His second-round 70 was the second-lowest score of the round, while his final 18-hole total of 71 was the third-best score of the last round. The invitational featured five of the top 10 teams in the country, and nine of the top 20.

At the Royal Oaks Invitational in Dallas on Oct. 29-30, Erkenbeck was one of three Lobos to shoot a 3-under 68 on the final 18 holes to give New Mexico the low third-round team score of 9-under 275. Over the final round, Erkenbeck earned birdies on holes 14, 16 and 18 to help the Lobos tie with No. 41 Texas Tech for second place, four strokes behind team champion and No. 16 Oklahoma State. In a field that featured four top 20, and nine top 50 teams, Erkenbeck placed tied for 16th out of a field of 80 golfers. He fired a 54-hole total of 1-under 212 (73-71-68) on the par-71, 7,068 yard Royal Oaks Course.

For the month, Erkenbeck posted par or under in five of six rounds and collected a scoring average of 70.83.
