LAS VEGAS (UNLVRebels.com) - The UNLV men's tennis team started off its 2013 dual-match season in solid fashion Friday with a 5-2 victory over Utah State at the Fertitta Tennis Complex.

Enjoying above-average January temperatures, the Rebels began by sweeping three doubles matches for one team point. Tamas Batyi and Johannes Markel downed Fredrik Peterson and Matt Sweet on court two while the freshman pairing of Gilad Berman and Carlos Di Laura defeated Brandon Nielsen and Andrew Whiting 8-3 at the third spot. Finally, at the top of the lineup, Bernard Schoeman and Ace Matias closed out Sven Poslusny and Marcus Fritz, 8-6.

Moving to singles play, the hosts earned four straight-set wins to clinch the overall victory. Senior Charlie Alvarado downed Peterson 6-3, 6-2 at No. 2; Matias swept Fritz 6-3, 6-0 at No. 3; Berman got his first collegiate singles win, 6-0, 6-1 over Sweet at No. 4; and Markel downed Tanner Dance 6-3, 6-0 on court six. The remaining two matches went to a super-tiebreaker and the Aggies pulled out both for their two points.
