LAS VEGAS (UNLVRebels.com) - It was a super Sunday for the UNLV men's tennis team as it remained undefeated with a 7-0 victory over UC Riverside at the Fertitta Tennis Complex.
The Rebels improved to 5-0 to start a season for the first time since 2009.
UNLV began the day by taking both completed doubles matches. Ace Matias and Bernard Schoeman defeated Kevin Griffin and Marcus Vizcarra, 8-1, at the top position while Gilad Berman and Carlos Di Laura won 8-3 on court three over Jimmy Roberts and Simon Peters.
The Rebels lost only one set in singles action.
Matias completed his perfect 6-0 weekend with a 6-1, 6-2 win over Roberts at the top spot; Tamas Batyi eased by Julian Ruffin 6-4, 6-1 at No. 2; Berman swept Luis Gastao 6-2, 6-2 at No. 3; Markel won 6-1, 6-2 over Calvin Ngo at No. 4; Di Laura rallied to defeat Griffin 1-6, 6-3, 1-0 (10-7) in a super-tiebreaker at No. 5; and Willie Sublette picked up his first 2013 victory on court six, 6-4, 6-2, over Kelly Dickson.
"It was great to finish the weekend with a win," UNLV head coach Owen Hambrook said. "It was a long three days of tennis and we saw a lot of improvement as it progressed."
The Rebels will now take a week off before seeing their first road action of the season when they play at former conference-rival BYU on February 15.
