Men's Tennis Knocks Off Fresno State
Feb. 8, 2013
FRESNO, Calif. - The No. 66 San Diego State Men's Tennis team earned its first Mountain West Conference win of the season on Friday afternoon, defeating Fresno State, 4-2, on the road.
Due to weather, the match began with singles play. Once SDSU (4-2, 1-0 MW) earned its fourth point, the two sides never competed in doubles action.
Aztecs senior Derek Siddiqui clinched the victory for SDSU with a thrilling win over Reid deLaubenfels 1-6, 6-3, 7-6 (10-8) in the No. 1 slot. Siddiqui rallied in the second set after losing the first, then fought off two match points in the tie-breaker to earn the decisive fourth point.
Junior Hunter Nicholas began the match with a 6-1, 6-1 win over Jeremy Quiroz, and junior Juan Florez added a 6-3, 6-4 victory over Felipe Fritz for the Aztecs' second point. Sophomore Thorsten Bertsch picked up a 6-0, 7-6 (7-4) decision over Sai Kartik Nakireddi in No. 2 singles play to set up Siddiqui's dramatic finish.
SDSU won't have much time to celebrate Friday's victory, as the Aztecs face No. 22 Auburn on Saturday. The match is scheduled to begin at 1 p.m. PT, in Fresno, Calif.
