Feb. 12, 2012

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. –The outdoors may have been cold, but inside the bubble the Lobos were on fire as they defeated South Alabama with a score of 6-1. The Lobos record improved to 6-2 winning all six matches at home.

The Lobos were in charge throughout the match setting the pace by winning all three doubles matches.

Conor Berg and Ben Dunbar played in the number one position defeating Bocaert/Bernard with a score of 8-6.

In the second spot of doubles, Jadon Phillips and Phil Anderson defeated Bartsch/Leitner with a score of 8-3. Phil Anderson had to be taken out of the last match against New Mexico State due to an injury.

Carl Ho and James Hignett played in the number three doubles defeating Kuehne/Hall also with a score of 8-3.

The Lobo’s momentum started with doubles and it was no different for singles.

In a close match at the number one spot, Jadon Phillips took on Romain Bocaert finishing him off with a score of 6-4, 7-6.

“I think I played really well today,” Jadon Phillips said. “I was up 6-4, 5-2 and he came back but I stopped him by winning the second set. I am definitely going to have to be able to do that during the season. I played really well and he did too.”

At the number two singles, Ben Dunbar took on Alex Bernard defeating him with a score of 6-4, 6-3.

Samir Iftikhar played against Daniel Leitner at the number three spot. Samir Iftikhar got off to a great start defeating him with a score of 6-2. He fell in a tight second set with a score of 7-6. Daniel Leitner saw his chance and defeated Samir Iftikhar with a final score of 2-6, 7-6, 10-3.

At the number four singles, Conor Berg faced Cody Hall defeating him with a score of 6-4, 6-2.

“He [Cody Hall] had a bunch of guys out there rooting for him so that was pretty interesting to see even at a home match,” Conor Berg said. “I tried to stay focused on what I was doing and playing my game. I really didn’t let him into the match. I felt like I was adjusted to what he was doing so I’m pretty happy with the result.”

Carl Ho played against Christian Kuehne at the number five spot starting the match with a perfect 6-0 first set. It was not as easy the second set but Carl Ho came out on top finishing with a final score of 6-0, 6-4.

At the number six position, Mitch McDaniels faced off against Dauw Kruger finishing last in the dual match. Mitch McDaniels took the first set with a score of 6-2. He lost his energy in the second coming short with a score of 4-6. He was not willing to admit defeat so easily winning by four points in the third set tiebreak. Mitch McDaniels came out the victor with a final score of 6-2, 4-6, 10-6.

“From top to bottom, I think we are playing better. We are gaining a lot of confidence which is important as the year goes along,” Head Coach Alan Dils said. “We are getting a little bit of a swagger believing in ourselves and we are doing it with a little bit of injuries. Phil Anderson wasn’t able to get to singles today but we have a deep team so we knew whoever we put in his spot could do a good job and they did. Once again, the depth of our team comes back to help us and I think we are doing great job so far.”

The Lobos next two matches will be in Evanston, Illinois where they will face Northwestern and DePaul on February 18th and 19th respectively.
