Men's Tennis Nets Heartbreak In SLC

Feb. 16, 2013

SALT LAKE CITY ( - The UNLV men's tennis team came roaring back from a 3-0 deficit before suffering a heartbreaking 4-3 loss at former conference-rival Utah Saturday in the Rice Eccles Tennis Center.

The Rebels dropped to 5-2 while the Utes improved to 7-1.

Utah escaped with the key doubles point to begin the day and then picked up two quick straight-set wins at the bottom of the singles lineup to make it 3-0.

Gilad Berman got the Rebels on the board with a 6-2, 3-6, 6-2 win over Devin Lane at the fourth spot. Charlie Alvarado then finished off Cedric Willems 6-3, 6-4 at No. 3. At the top of the lineup, former Ute Ace Matias, who transferred to UNLV this season, picked up a nice ranked win by outlasting former teammate Slim Hanza, 2-6, 6-3, 7-6 (7-0 in the tiebreaker). All eyes then moved to court two where Rebel Tamas Batyi was in a battle with Dmytro Mamedov. Batyi won the first set but then saw Mamedov take a 4-6, 6-4, 6-4 clinching victory.

"It was good to see guys bounce back (after losing 5-0 Friday at BYU)," UNLV head coach Owen Hambrook said. "This was a great college tennis match, unfortunately we ended up on the losing side today. We need to keep working hard on some things and look forward to getting back on the courts."

Next up, the Rebels head to the Northwest and take on Oregon a week from today.
