Men's Tennis Upsets Oklahoma State
Feb. 28, 2013
SAN DIEGO (UNLVRebels.com) - The UNLV men's tennis team snapped a four-match losing streak Thursday by upsetting No. 62 Oklahoma State in a neutral-site match on the campus of San Diego State.
The Rebels improved to 6-4 while the Cowboys, who still lead the all-time series 7-5, fell to 6-4. The win marked the program's first over a ranked opponent since it downed No. 74 Ball State on March 8, 2012, and the highest ranked win since downing No. 45 South Florida on Jan. 29, 2012.
UNLV would be forced to come from behind, however, as OSU began the day by taking the doubles point -- winning both completed matches.
Moving to singles play, Ace Matias quickly dispatched Chris Haworth, 6-1, 6-2, at the top of the lineup while Johannes Markel gave UNLV the lead with a 6-3, 6-1 victory over Oleksiv Arovin at the No. 5 position. After the Cowboys tied it again with a win on court six, the Rebels took three consecutive three-set matches to win going away. Gilad Berman downed Matt Campbell, 6-4, 5-7, 6-2, at No. 3; Charlie Alvarado rallied past Richard Del Nunzio, 0-6, 6-4, 6-2, at No. 4; and Tamas Batyi closed the proceedings with a 6-3, 6-7, 7-5 victory over Denys Pume on court two.
"Oklahoma State really took it to us in doubles to get the point so it was great to see Ace and then Johannes win quickly to give us a lead," said UNLV head coach Owen Hambrook. "Then it became a real battle that could have gone either way. I'm really proud of everyone for helping us post a great team victory vs. a very well-coached opponent."
The Rebels are also competing in the storied Pacific Coast Doubles Tournament in La Jolla, which runs today through Sunday. UNLV will then settle in for a key eight-match homestand starting March 7 vs. Ball State.
