TCU Tennis Handles Arizona at Home Friday, 5-2
March 2, 2012
FORT WORTH, Texas - The TCU men's tennis team enjoyed its first outdoor home match of the 2012 season Friday, taking down Arizona by the score of 5-2 at the Bayard H. Friedman Tennis Center.
“I was happy with the way that freshman Facundo Lugones got his singles match over quickly and he was the first off again,” TCU head coach David Roditi said. “I also liked the way Will Stein, another freshman, played. He hit some clutch shots to help us win the always important doubles point and he clinched the team win for us in singles. Daniel Sanchez also showed a lot of toughness tonight. I’m disappointed in the way some of our guys lost their composure out there. It was embarrassing for them and our program. Now we need to adjust our focus, because we have a tough match at Texas on Sunday.”
The Horned Frogs (5-6) got off to a good start early, stealing the doubles point with wins at the No.1 and No. 3 courts. The team of senior Daniel Sanchez and sophomore Max Stevens got the ball rolling, picking up an 8-6 victory over Arizona’s team of Carlos Bermudez and Mario Urquidi. The win moved the TCU pairing to 5-1 this spring.
After TCU dropped the match at No. 2, junior JT Sundling and newcomer Will Stein picked up the pieces to seal the doubles point for the Frogs, dishing out a 9-7 decision over Sumeet Shinde and Kieren Thompson.
Freshman Facundo Lugones kept the momentum in TCU’s favor to begin singles play, wasting little time to dismantle Bermudez at the No. 3 position, 6-4, 6-1. The win gave the Frogs a 2-0 lead in the team score and was the fourth-consecutive victory for the Buenos Aires, Argentina, native.
Sundling followed soon after with a convincing 6-0, 6-3 straight-set win against Shinde at the No. 2 position. Stein gave the Purple and White their fifth team win of the season with a 6-4, 6-3 decision against UA’s Sebastian Ionescu from the No. 5 court.
After the match was clinched, freshman Nick Chappell added to his team-leading win total, scratching his way to a 7-6 (5), 5-7, 1-0 (6) victory against Giacomo Miccini. The Indianapolis, Ind., product paces the Frogs with a 7-2 singles clip, all coming from the top spot in the lineup.
TCU will now return to the road, heading to the Texas state capital to take on No. 8 Texas in Austin. The match is scheduled to kickoff at 2 p.m., and will be televised nationally on the Longhorn Network.
