Rebels Win Battle With UC Irvine

LAS EGAS (UNLVRebels.com) - The UNLV men's tennis team upped its home record to 7-0 this season with a 5-2 win over UC Irvine Saturday afternoon at the Fertitta Tennis Complex.
The Rebels improved to 8-4 overall while the Anteaters fell to 2-11.
UNLV won the doubles point for the second straight outing, this time taking two of three matches. Ace Matias and Bernard Schoeman downed Ryan Cheung and Jacob Jung, 8-4, at the top of the lineup while Tamas Batyi and Johannes Markel clinched the point with an 8-5 win over Shuhei Shibahara and Jonathan Hamme at No. 2.
Moving to singles play, Matias continued his hot play with a 6-2, 6-1 victory over Cheung at the No. 1 position. All of the other five matches went three sets and UNLV took three of them. Batyi won 4-6, 6-3, 6-2 over Tyler Pham at No. 2; Gilad Berman won 6-4, 3-6, 6-2 over Jacob Jung at No. 3; and Markel rallied, 6-7, 6-0, 6-2 over Jonathan Poon on court six.
"I was proud of the guys because after losing four first sets they really battled to get the win today against the Anteaters," UNLV head coach Owen Hambrook said. "We now have to get ready for a tough Air force team tomorrow."
The Rebels return to the courts Sunday when they host Air Force starting with doubles play at 10 a.m. The match will mark the first of two meeting between the schools and will not count in the Mountain West standings. Admission to all matches is free of charge.
