March 22, 2013
SAN DIEGO - The No. 37 San Diego State Men's Tennis team had its four-match winning streak snapped on Friday, as the Aztecs lost to No. 23 Harvard, 4-1, in the second round of the SDSU/USD Invite at Aztec Tennis Center.
The match began with Harvard winning the doubles point, as the Crimson's No. 67-ranked team of Denis Nguyen and Casey MacMaster topped sophomore Thorsten Bertsch and Hunter Nicholas, 8-6, in the No. 1 doubles slot. Harvard's No. 3 unit of Kelvin Lam and Alex Steinroeder knocked off junior Juan Florez and Marvin Tawasi, 8-3, to put the Aztecs in an early hole.
In singles play, Andy Nguyen defeated Tawasi, 6-2, 6-1, to extend Harvard's lead to 2-0, and Nicky Hu's win over Florez, 6-3, 6-1, in the No. 5 slot pushed SDSU within one point of the loss. Nicholas earned a victory against Steinroeder, 6-2, 7-6 (5) in No. 3 singles to keep the Aztecs alive, but Denis Nguyen rallied after losing the first set to top No. 74 Derek Siddiqui, 2-6, 6-0, 6-1, in the No. 1 slot to clinch the match victory.
SDSU (12-5, 2-0 MW) will play in the third-place match against No. 44 Memphis on Saturday morning, beginning at 10 a.m. PT at Aztec Tennis Center. The Tigers are 6-5 this season, and are led by No. 105 Joe Salisbury and No. 111 Lukas Vrnak.
