Rebels Roll On
March 30, 2013
LAS VEGAS (UNLVRebels.com) - The 73rd-ranked UNLV men's tennis team remained perfect at home this season with a 4-3 upset victory over No. 62 Cal Poly at the Fertitta Tennis Complex on Saturday.
In what was the final non-confence match of the season, the Rebels, who have won eight straight, improved to 13-4 overall and 12-0 at home while the Mustangs fell to 8-7.
The hosts began the day by taking two of three doubles matches to earn a 1-0 lead. Ace Matias and Bernard Schoeman downed Andre Dome and Naveen Beasley, 8-5, at the top spot after Gilad Berman and Carlos Di Laura won their match on court three, 8-2, over Gannon Daynes and Derek Klein.
In singles play, the Rebels proved their depth as Cal Poly won both of the top two matches but still fell short. In a showdown at the No. 1 spot, 22nd-ranked Dome eked out a 7-5, 6-4 win over Matias. However, Berman won 6-2, 6-2 over Klein at No. 3 and Di Laura won 6-1, 3-0 when his opponent, Daynes, retired. The match was eventually tied at 3 when all eyes moved to court five where senior Johannes Markel rallied to clinch it over Matt Thomson 6-7, 6-2, 6-4.
"Today was a battle from start to finish and Cal Poly fought extremely hard," UNLV head coach Owen Hambrook said. "I could not be more proud of Johannes for clinching the match against a solid opponent."
Next up, the Rebels return to Mountain West play on Easter Sunday by hosting San Diego State. Doubles play begins at 11 a.m. and admission to all matches is free of charge.
