April 3, 2013
SAN DIEGO - The No. 43 San Diego State Men's Tennis team lost to cross-town foe No. 42 San Diego, 7-0, on Wednesday evening at Aztec Tennis Center. The match lasted about four and a half hours, as sophomore Thorsten Bertsch and USD's Thibaut Visy played late into the night in the No. 1 singles matchup.
SDSU made changes to its doubles pairings in the No. 1 and 2 slots, but it didn't affect the outcome, as USD began the match by sweeping doubles play. Visy and Clarke Spinosa defeated the Aztecs' No. 1 team of junior Hunter Nicholas and sophomore Andranik Khachatryan, 8-3, while Bertsch and senior Derek Siddiqui fell to Romain Kalaydjian and Uros Petronijevoc, 8-5, in the No. 2 matchup. Ciaran Fitzgerald and Victor Pugliese knocked off junior Juan Florez and freshman Marvin Tawasi, 8-6, to finish doubles action.
It didn't get much better for the Aztecs in singles action. Nicholas lost to Kalaydijian, 6-4, 6-3, in the No. 3 slot, while No. 78 Spinosa defeated No. 97 Siddiqui, 6-4, 6-3, in the No. 2 matchup. Tawasi fell to Petronijevoc, 6-1, 7-5, to clinch the match victory for the Toreros, and Florez was defeated by Victor Pugliese, 6-3-, 6-3, in No. 5 singles play. Khachatryan dropped a 6-3, 7-6 (6) decision to Fitzgerald in the No. 6 slot, and Visy outlasted Bertsch, 6-3, 6-7 (8), 11-9, to complete the sweep for USD.
The Aztecs return to action on Friday against Santa Clara, beginning at 3 p.m. PT at Aztec Tennis Center.
