Netters Post Road Rally

April 5, 2013

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. - The 64th-ranked UNLV men's tennis team posted one of its biggest road victories in years with a come-from-behind, 4-3, nail-biting upset at No. 59 New Mexico on Friday at the Estes Tennis Center.

The Rebels improved to 14-5 overall and 2-1 in the Mountain West while the Lobos fell to 9-11 and 0-2.

UNM started out the day by earning a 1-0 lead by taking two of three doubles matches in a hotly contested session. UNLV's only win came at the second spot where Johannes Markel and Tamas Batyi downed Jadon Phillips and Riaan Du Toit, 8-6.

The hosts eventually built a 3-1 lead after taking two of the first three completed singles matches. UNLV got wins from Ace Matias at the top spot, 6-2, 6-3, over Samir Lftikhar while Bernard Schoeman downed Mads Hegelund, 6-4, 6-4, at No. 4. Gilad Berman tied it by rallying past Phillips 3-6, 6-1, 6-4, at No. 2 and then Markel clinched it with a 6-0, 4-6, 6-4, victory on court six over Riaan DuToit.

"Today was a battle from start to finish," UNLV head coach Owen Hambrook said. "At one point things didn't look good for the Rebels but I am proud of the way we fought from behind against a good team."

The Rebels next head up to Colorado Springs to take on Air Force on Sunday.
