Men's Tennis Sweeps No. 56 Santa Clara, 7-0

SAN DIEGO - The No. 43 San Diego State Men's Tennis team bounced back after a loss two days earlier to defeat No. 56 Santa Clara, 7-0, Friday evening at Aztec Tennis Center. It was the Aztecs third sweep of the season.

SDSU (14-7, 3-0 MW) got off to a good start by winning the doubles point. The Aztecs No. 3 team of junior Juan Florez and freshman Marvin Tawasi topped Tom Pham and Eugene Muchynski, 8-2, to begin the match, while the No. 2 unit of senior Derek Siddiqui and sophomore Thorsten Bertsch defeated Matt Kecki and Tomasz Soltyka, 9-8 (5), to secure the doubles point. SDSU's No. 1 team of junior Hunter Nicholas and sophomore Andranik Khachatryan lost a close match to John Lamble and Ilya Osintsev, 9-8 (5), but it was the last time the Aztecs would lose the rest of the way.

Siddiqui, ranked No. 97 in the nation, began the Aztecs unscathed run through singles action, knocking off Osintsev, 6-2, 6-2 in the No. 2 slot, while Tawasi followed with quick victory over Pham, 6-3, 6-1, in No. 4 singles play. Florez earned a win against Soltyka, 6-2, 6-3, at No. 5 to clinch the match victory, and Bertsch defeated No. 63 Lamble, 6-3, 6-2, playing in the No. 1 slot for the second-consecutive match. Khachatryan held off Muchynski in three sets, 6-0, 3-6, 6-3, at No. 4, and Nicholas rallied after losing the first set to complete the sweep with a grueling three-set victory over Kecki, 5-7, 7-6 (4), 10-3, in the No. 3 spot.

The Aztecs return to action next Friday, April 12, when they play host to UC Irvine and Mountain West Conference foe Air Force in a double header at Aztec Tennis Center, beginning at 1 p.m. PT.
