Hawaii Spoils Home Finale For Men's Tennis
April 10, 2012
LAS VEGAS (UNLVRebels.com) - The UNLV men's tennis team closed out both its non-conference and home schedule Tuesday by losing 5-2 to Hawai'i at an unseasonably hot Fertitta Tennis Complex.
The Rebels fell to 7-13 while the Warriors improved to 5-10.
"Rene, Alex and Brian all contributed to the UNLV program both on the courts and in the classroom as all three are outstanding student-athletes," Hambrook said. "We wish them all the best and know they will go on to do great things."
The visitors from the islands took a 1-0 lead after winning a spirited doubles competition. The teams split matches on courts 2-3 as the UNLV duo of Tamas Batyi and Johannes Markel downed Jared Spiker and Carter Lam 8-5 at the second position. The top court would decide it and UH eventually pulled out an 8-6 win.
In singles play, five matches were decided in straight sets and UH took four of them to clinch it. Scoring for the Rebels was Ruegamer, who downed Jonathan Brooklyn 5-7, 6-1, 1-0 (10-7) at the top of the lineup, and Willie Sublette, who swept Carter Lam 6-3, 6-2 on court six.
Next up, the Rebels hit the road to face San Diego State on Saturday.
