Men's Tennis Tops UC Irvine, 5-2

SAN DIEGO - The No. 42 San Diego State Men's Tennis team defeated UC Irvine, 5-2, on Wednesday evening at Aztec Tennis Center. It was the second-consecutive victory for the Aztecs.

SDSU (15-7, 3-0 MW) got off to a rough start in doubles play, as the No. 1 team of junior Hunter Nicholas and sophomore Andranik Khachatryan fell to Ryan Cheung and Jonathan Hammel, 8-2. The Aztecs' No. 2 team of senior Derek Siddiqui and Shiva Sangwan came back with a win against Tyler Pham and Jacob Jung, 8-4, but the No. 3 unit of Junior Juan Florez and freshman Marvin Tawasi lost to Caryl Hernandez and Justin Agbayani, 8-4, as the Anteaters clinched the doubles point.

The Aztecs responded quickly in singles play, however, as Nicholas topped Reo Asami,6-1, 6-0, and Tawasi followed with a victory over Jacob Jung, 6-3, 6-2. No. 108 Bertsch defeated Ryan Cheung, 6-4, 7-5, but No. 109 Siddiqui fell to Tyler Pham, 6-3, 4-6, 6-2, to pull UCI within 3-2. But SDSU won out from there, with Khachatryan earning a three-set victory against Shuhei Shibahara, 2-6, 6-1, 6-4 to seal the match victory, and Florez came through with a three-set win of his own over Hammel, 2-6, 6-3, 6-1.

SDSU returns to the court on Friday, April 12, as the Aztecs play host to Mountain West foe Air Force, beginning at 2 p.m. PT at Aztec Tennis Center.
