SAN DIEGO - The No. 42 San Diego State Men's Tennis team knocked off Mountain West Conference foe Air Force, 6-1, on Friday afternoon at Aztec Tennis Center. SDSU has now won three-straight dual matches.
The Aztecs (16-7, 4-0 MW) swept all three doubles matches en route to winning the doubles point, and Air Force (10-10, 0-4) was never able to catch up. SDSU's No. 2 team of senior Derek Siddiqui and Junior Shiva Sangwan defeated Alex Grubbs and Jack McCullers, 8-2, while the Aztecs' No. 1 duo of junior Hunter Nicholas and sophomore Andranik Khachatryan topped Lance Wilhelm and Grant Taylor, 8-6, to clinch the doubles point. In addition, junior Juan Florez and freshman Marvin Tawasi earned a victory over Andrew Parks and Steven Young, 8-6, in the No. 3 slot.
SDSU didn't let up in singles play. Nicholas, in what has become the usual in recent matches, quickly defeated Young, 6-1, 6-1, in the No. 2 slot for the first singles victory of the day. It was Nicholas' third-straight victory and his first in No. 2 singles this season. Khachatryan followed with a victory over McCullers, 6-0, 6-0, to put the Aztecs ahead, 3-0, and Tawasi's win against Taylor, 6-2, 6-3, sealed the match victory for SDSU. No. 109 Siddiqui knocked off No. 86 Wilhelm, 7-6 (2), 6-1, for his third victory this season against a ranked opponent, and Florez earned a decision over Grubbs, 6-2, 6-3. Sangwan dropped a three-set match to Andy Jackson, 3-6, 6-2, 6-2, in the No. 6 slot to wrap up singles action.
The Aztecs continue conference play on Sunday, as they play host to No. 61 New Mexico, beginning at 11 a.m. PT at Aztec Tennis Center.
