Rebs Celebrate Senior Day With Shutout

April 20, 2013

LAS VEGAS (UNLVRebels.com) - The 64th-ranked UNLV men's tennis team celebrated its annual Senior Day with a 7-0 blanking of Fresno State on a beautiful Saturday at the Fertitta Tennis Complex.

The Rebels improved to 16-6 overall, which tied the 2005 season for the most wins by the program since UNLV finished 20-7 in 1997. Closing its home campaign with a shiny 13-2 mark, head coach Owen Hambrook's squad finished the Mountain West season at 4-2, which represents the school's second-most wins since the league adopted a round-robin schedule in 2001. The Bulldogs, meanwhile, fell to 7-16 overall and 2-4 in MW action.

Before the match, the team honored a trio of seniors -- Bernard Schoeman, Johannes Markel and Charlie Alvarado -- and then all three went out and helped lead the hosts to victory.

Bathed in sunshine, the Rebels swept three doubles matches to take a 1-0 lead. Ace Matias and Schoeman doubled up Reid deLaubenfels and Sam MacNeil 8-4 at the top position; Tamas Batyi and Markel won 8-5 over Felipe Frita and Nikolas Papic at No. 2; and Gilad Berman and Carlos Di Laura got by Jeremy Quiroz and Sai Kartik Nakireddi, 8-5, on court three.

Moving to singles play, Markel, who is enjoying a career year, improved to 18-8 in dual matches with a 6-1, 6-1 victory over Quiroz at No. 6. Alvarado posted his career-high 12th singles win this season, 6-1, 6-4 over MacNeil at No. 5, to make it 3-0. Schoeman then clinched it by improving to 3-1 in Mountain West play with a 6-4, 6-4 win over Papic at No. 4.

MW Player of the Year candidate Matias, ranked 123rd in the nation, improved to 23-8 as sophomore with a 6-1, 6-4 victory over deLaubenfels at the top spot; MW Freshman of the Year candidate Berman raised his record to 18-4, including 5-1 vs. league foes, with a 6-3, 3-6, 1-0 (10-7) super-tiebreaker win over Fritz at No. 2; and Batyi rallied to preserve the shutout with a 4-6, 7-6, 1-0 (10-8) triumph over Nakireddi on court three.

"It's always an emotional time on senior day," Hambrook said. "All three of our guys finishing up have been great Rebels during their time here and I know will be very successful in their future careers. It certainly made it even more special to have all three win during their final appearance at Fertitta."

The Rebels now await their seeding and matchup for next week's Mountain West Championships, which will get underway Thursday at the Air Force Academy in Colorado.
