Lobos Soar Over Falcons 4-0; All-Mountain West Team Announced

April 27, 2012

SAN DIEGO, CALIF.--The Lobos earned a clear-cut victory soaring over the Falcons 4-0 in the quarterfinals of the Mountain West Tournament. The night before the win, two singles players and two doubles teams were named to the All-Mountain West Team leading into the match. The Lobos will now face the host school San Diego State in the Semifinals.

The Lobos snatched the doubles point away from Air Force that the team did not even know what hit them. The doubles team of Ben Dunbar and Conor Berg defeated Grubbs/Jackson with a score of 8-3. James Hignett and Carl Ho led the way finishing first by giving up only one game against Young/Lineberry with a score of 8-1.

Once the Lobos took the doubles point, the match was virtually over. The Lobos kept the momentum in their favor and did not look back.

At number two singles, Ben Dunbar defeated Alex Grubbs with a score of 6-3, 6-3 clinching the win for the Lobos.

At number three singles, the energetic Phil Anderson rightfully showed much emotion as he took control of the match against Landon Kinsey. Phil Anderson won the match 6-1, 6-0 making this his fifth win at the number three spot.

At number four singles, Junior Conor Berg showed that experience is necessary in crucial situations against his opponent Sophomore Steven Young. Conor Berg blew past him with a score of 6-1, 6-0 advancing his dual match record to 18-3.

The Lobos make one more step towards the Mountain West Title but it seems that San Diego State is standing in the way in the semifinals.

A sneak peek at the opponent is that the host school for the tournament San Diego State is seeded number two in the draw. They received a bye to advance to the semifinals. Earlier this season, UNM faced them in their territory falling to them 4-3 with four out of the six singles matches going to three sets.

With a match ending this close in the regular season, there is a possibility of an upset in the tournament.

The Aztecs are 4-1 in conference and are 15-7 overall this season. The last win for the team was against #57 UC-Santa Barbara with a score of 4-3. The record for the San Diego State against UNM is 17-13 in favor of the Aztecs.

If the Lobos do pull an upset, they will have to face the winner of #1 Boise State vs. #4 TCU in the finals. Boise State is a red-hot team winning 16 of their last 17 matches. The team has not lost a conference match this season posting a 24-6 overall record. TCU should not be counted out yet since their leading singles player is 14-6 at the number one spot. The top doubles team is 9-6 in dual match play. TCU is 2-3 in conference play and are 9-14 overall for the season.

Last and not least, the night before the win against Air Force two singles players and two doubles teams were named to the All-Mountain West Team. Senior Ben Dunbar and Junior Jadon Phillips represent the Lobos in singles, while the teams of Phil Anderson/Jadon Phillips and Conor Berg/Ben Dunbar represent the Lobos in doubles. For both of the singles players, this is their third time to be selected to the team. For the duo of Phil Anderson/Jadon Phillips this will be their third time also to be selected and for the duo of Conor Berg/Ben Dunbar this will be their second time to be selected for the team.
