Two Lobos Advance in Singles Main Draw at Midland, Texas

MIDLAND, TEXAS – Two Lobos advance to the third round of the main draw as the first day of the Midland Racquet Club Collegiate Invitational comes to a close. Sophomore Samir Iftikhar and Junior Mads Hegelund will represent UNM in the main draw of singles, while teammates RS Sophomore Mitch McDaniels and Sophomore James Hignett will advance in the consolation draw of singles.

Samir Iftikhar defeated the number seven seed of the tournament Marc Hermann from the University of Nebraska 6-1, 6-2 in the second round after receiving a bye in the first round.

Mads Hegelund also defeated a University of Nebraska player Brandon Videtich with a score of 6-2, 6-1 to advance to the second round. He continued his winning streak to defeat Wichita State’s Guillermo Nicol in three sets with a score of 6-4, 3-6, 6-1 to advance to the third round.

Mitch McDaniels had a run of bad luck as he fell to University of Texas’ Joey Swaysland with a score of 6-2, 6-1, but then went on to defeat Zach Sivalis of Tyler Junior College with a score of 6-4, 6-1 to advance in the consolation bracket.

James Hignett put up quite a fight against the number two seed Texas Tech’s Victor Manzini in the second round after receiving a bye in the first. He fell in three sets with a score of 6-2, 4-6, 6-3. He turned the momentum around in his second match to defeat Davidson’s Nicky Kunz with a score of 6-3, 4-6, 1-0 (10-3).

In doubles, the duo of James Hignett and Mitch McDaniels fell to Pereira/Guitierrez of Wichita State 8-5. The doubles team of Samir Iftikhar and Mads Hegelund also tasted defeat after falling in a tiebreak to Abilene Christian’s Hach/Cortes with a score of 9-8 (5).

“Overall it was a good day. I think the players got a few good matches under their belts and overall received good competition,” Head Coach Alan Dils said. “I’m looking forward to see what tomorrow has to bring to us.”
