Lobos Close Out First Day at ITA Regionals

Oct. 17, 2012

LAS VEGAS, NEV.—The Lobos advance five singles players along with two doubles teams in the main draw and one singles player along with one doubles team in consolation as the first day of the ITA Regional Championships comes to an end. Lobos Jadon Phillips and Conor Berg have not yet played in doubles or singles, since they received a bye in the first round along with Samir Iftikhar who has also not yet played in singles.

In doubles, Riaan Du Toit and James Hignett, who together are leading the team with an overall record of 3-1, defeated Weber State’s Ben Rode and Ryan Garner with a score of 8-1. This now pushes the duo’s record to 4-1 for the fall season as they lead into the next round to face the seventh seed University of Idaho’s Abid Akbar and Marius Cirstea.

Mads Hegelund and Samir Iftikhar have been paired up a lot this fall season and rightfully so as the two also defeated a Weber State duo composed of Oliver Good and Cajo Pointena. The duo advanced to the next round with a score of 8-3 and will face Boise State’s Andy bettles and Nathan Sereke.

The ninth seed of the tournament from the University of Idaho, Jose Bendeck and Cesar Torres got the better of Simon Hegelund and Mitch McDaniels in the first round. The Lobos could only gain one game on the duo and fell with a score of 8-1. The duo bounced back in consolation doubles as they defeated NMSU’s Eduardo Cabrita and Strahinja Trecakov with a score of 8-3.

After doubles concluded, the tournament moved onto singles.

The 25th seed McDaniels took on U.S. Air Force Academy’s Steven Young and lost the first set 6-4. That was enough to set McDaniels on edge as he battled it out to force a three set win with a score of 4-6, 6-4, 6-3. He will advance to the next round to face University of Idaho’s Jake Knox.

Simon Hegelund closed out a solid match against U.S. Air Force Academy’s Ali Rizvi to win the match 6-2, 6-4. He will face the number three seed University of Utah’s Dmytro Mamedov in the next round.

Hignett dropped only two games in his singles match against Weber State’s Rode, whom he played earlier in the day in doubles. He defeated Rode 6-2, 6-0 and will advance to the next round to face the number 11 seed from Boise State Nathan Sereke.

Du Toit had a tough matchup as he fell to Brigham Young’s Travis Fillmore in a three set battle with a score of 4-6, 6-4, 6-1. He didn’t let the loss deter him as he bounced back to defeat Niklas Brandes from Montana State with a score of 6-3, 6-2.

Mads Hegelund dropped his first set against NMSU’s Cabrita with a score of 6-1. Hegelund forced a momentum change in the second set to win 6-4, and by that time it was too late for his opponent to catch up as the Lobo sealed his win with a final score of 1-6, 6-4, 6-2. He will face Weber State’s Sanjay Goswami in the next round.

“It was a solid day of tennis,” Head Coach Alan Dils said. “We had some good wins out there and we are looking forward to what tomorrow has in store for us.”

Doubles will start tomorrow at 9:00 a.m. MT with singles to follow.
