Lobos Keep Up Momentum at ITA Regionals

LAS VEGAS, NEV. – After another exciting day of tennis, Lobos attack both the singles and doubles draw from both ends of it, main draw and consolation at the ITA Regional Championships.
On the singles side of things, the number nine seed of the tournament Samir Iftikhar will advance to the round of 16 to face the number eight seed University of Nevada-Reno’s Victor Ouvrard after two solid wins earlier in the day. The first win came in a three set battle against University of Nevada-Reno’s Ryan Andrada where Iftikhar came out on the bright side of it with a score of 6-1, 2-6, 6-1. He then faced University of Denver’s Fabio Biasion where he won in two straight sets with a score of 6-1, 7-5.
The 25th seed of the tournament, Mitch McDaniels, won his first match of the day dropping only two games against University of Idaho’s Jake Knox in the round of 64 to win 6-0, 6-2. He was stopped short of the round of 16 by Brigham Young’s Keaton Cullimore falling with a score of 6-3, 7-5.
The 25th seed of the tournament, Mads Hegelund, finished off Weber State’s Sanjay Goswami with a score of 6-1, 7-5 in the round of 64. He could only gain four games off of his opponent in the next round UNLV’s Tama Batyi to fall 6-3, 6-1.
Jadon Phillips had a tough break in his first round after receiving a bye in the round of 128. He fell in a close second set tiebreak to Brigham Young’s John Pearce with a score of 6-4, 7-6. Phillips turned the momentum around to defeat U.S. Air Force Academy’s Ali Rizvi in consolation with a score of 6-2, 6-1. He will face U.S. Air Force Academy’s Grant Taylor who will no doubt be looking to avenge his fallen teammate Rizvi in the third round of consolation.
Riaan Du Toit after falling in the first round of the tournament is now making his way in consolation as he advances to the third round of consolation after defeated NMSU’s Marc Westgate with a score of 6-2, 6-2. He will face U.S. Air Force Academy’s Andy Jackson.
James Hignett fell to the number 11 seed Nathan Sereke of Boise State with a score of 6-0, 6-4 in the round of 64. He moved onto the consolation draw and fell to Montana State’s Kenny Dodd with a score of 6-1, 6-2.
Conor Berg received a bye in the first round to advance to the next round and it was there that he defeated Brigham Young’s Scott Bohne with a score of 6-0, 6-1 in the round of 64. He was trying to keep up the momentum but UNLV’S Ace Matias got in the way stopping his path defeating Berg 6-1, 7-6.
Simon Hegelund went up against the number three seed Dmytro Mamedov from the University of Utah and managed to gain two games on him, falling with a score of 6-1, 6-1. He did not let the loss deter him as he advanced in consolation after defeating University of Montana’s Zach Drost with a three set score of 3-6, 6-3, 6-1. He will face University of Utah’s Justin Archer in the third round of consolation.
On the doubles side of the tournament, two doubles team keep hope alive for the Lobos as they advance to the next round.
The number three seed doubles team Phillips and Berg, received a bye in the first round and advance to the round of 16, after defeating Montana State’s Niklas Brandes and Diego campos with a score of 8-2. The duo will have to face University of Utah’s Dmytro Mamedov and Alejandro Medinella in the third round of the main draw.
Du Toit and Hignett ran into a dead end in the round of 32 where they faced University of Idaho’s Abid Akbar and Marius Cirstea. The duo fell 8-3 in the main draw, but continue to advance in consolation after they defeated U.S. Air Force Academy’s Rizvi and Young with a close score of 8-6. They will face University of Utah’s Rafeal Davidian and Ben Tasevac in the third round of consolation.
Mads Hegelund and Samir Iftikhar were defeated by Boise State’s Andy Bettles and Nathan Sereke in a close tiebreak score of 9-8 in the second round of doubles main draw. They moved over to the consolation bracket where they fell also in a close score againt Brigham Young’s Scott Bohne and Nikki raie with a score of 8-6.
Doubles will start at 9:00 a.m. MT with singles to follow.
