Lobos Conclude ITA Regionals and 2012 Fall Season

LAS VEGAS, NEV. – The Lobos end their fall season on a good note after concluding the ITA Regionals. Samir Iftikhar comes home with the second place title after a good run to the finals defeating two higher seeded players along the way. Fellow teammates Riaan Du Toit and James Hignett also come home on a good note as they take the consolation title in doubles.
Iftikhar finished the tournament falling to the number one seed and the top 65 player in the nation, Enej Bonin from the University of Denver, with a score of 6-0, 6-3. Iftikhar comes home with the second place title after a good run defeating two higher seeded players along the way to reach the finals.
UNM’s next match will be on Jan. 21, 2013 when the Lobos take on the Texas A&M-Corpus Christi Islanders at home at 6:00 p.m. MT.
A look back as to what this fall season entailed for the Lobos:
At the Midland Invitational, RS Sophomore Mitch McDaniels took the consolation singles title on Sept. 16th.
At the Denver Invitational, the tournament featured no rounds but instead, kept points as each team faced each other. The doubles duo of Jadon Phillips and Conor Berg took second place in the tournament.
Jadon Phillips finished his run at the ITA All-American Championships 1-1 in singles after defeating UNLV’s Tamas Batyi with a score of 6-4, 6-0 in qualifying consolation draw.
And at the UNM Balloon Fiesta Invitational, the Lobos claimed four champions and two co-champions to finish the tournament.
In the Silver doubles draw, the Lobos won both main draw and consolation. James Hignett and Riaan Du Toit faced Northern Arizona's Dominic Bermudez and Patrick Schimmelbauer in the main draw finals to drop only two games to claim the title with a score of 8-2.
On the other side of the silver doubles draw, Evan Corona-Saunders and Simon Hegelund faced New Mexico State's Jeremy Harlas and Guilherme Carvalho to win the consolation title in a close tiebreak match with a score of 9-8.
In the Cherry singles draw, Iftikhar defeated NMSU’s Luis Ramirez in the finals with a score of 6-3, 1-6, 6-4 to claim the title.
In the Silver singles draw, Hignett and Du Toit who teamed up in doubles to win the title, decided to both share the singles title also. The two were named co-champions after making it to the finals with strong semifinal victories.
In the Turquoise singles draw, Mitch McDaniels faced New Mexico State's Eduardo Cabrita in the main draw finals with McDaniels coming out on top to claim the singles title with a final score of 6-2, 7-6.
And just today, Samir Iftikhar takes home second place at the ITA Regionals falling to the number one seed and the top 65 player in the nation, Enej Bonin from the University of Denver, with a score of 6-0, 6-3.
