Falcons Host Two at the Academy This Weekend

The Air Force men’s tennis team plays its first home matches of the 2013 spring season this weekend at the Academy. The Falcons will face Montana State on Saturday, Jan. 26 and Seattle University on Sunday, Jan. 27. Both matches will begin at 9 a.m.
The Falcons split a pair of matches last weekend in Boise, Idaho, losing to 38th-ranked Boise State on Saturday, then defeating Montana 4-3 on Sunday. Senior Lance Wilhelm went 2-0 at the No. 1 singles spot, including a 7-5, 6-3 victory over Boise State’s Andrew Bettles, the 28th-ranked player in the nation. Junior Andy Jackson also won both of his singles matches at the No. 6 spot, while fellow juniors Alex Grubbs and Steven Young each won his singles match against Montana.
WILHELM NAMED CONFERENCE PLAYER OF THE WEEK
Air Force senior Lance Wilhelm has been named the Mountain West Men’s Tennis Player of the Week.
Wilhelm, a native of Gig Harbor, Wash., went a combined 3-1 last week as the Falcons lost a conference match to Boise State 5-2 on Saturday, then defeated Montana 4-3 on Sunday. Wilhelm posted the biggest win of his career on Saturday, defeating 28th-ranked Andrew Bettles of Boise State, 7-5, 6-3, then posted a 7-6, 6-1 victory over Andrew Warren of Montana.
Wilhelm and his doubles partner, Grant Taylor, the eighth-ranked team in the Mountain Region, defeated Montana’s Andrew Warren and Ethan Vaughn, 8-4, on Sunday.
AIR FORCE HEAD COACH DAN OOSTERHOUS
Air Force head coach Dan Oosterhous is in his fourth season as the men’s tennis coach after being named the program’s 12th head coach on October 1, 2009. Oosterhous, a 1993 graduate of the Academy, replaced legendary head coach Rich Gugat, who retired after 36 years at the helm of the men’s tennis program. Oosterhous led the Falcons to an 11-13 record last season and has a 32-41 career mark.
Air Force travels to face Utah on Feb. 1 and BYU on Feb. 2.
