Feb. 8, 2012

SAN DIEGO - San Diego State junior Derek Siddiqui has been named the Mountain West Co-Men's Tennis Player of the Week, the league announced Wednesday afternoon. This marks the first time Siddiqui has received the award and the second time an Aztec has been honored this season.

Siddiqui earned the match-clinching point for then-No. 74 SDSU in its 4-3 victory against then-No. 47 UC Irvine last Friday. At the No. 2 singles position, the junior tallied a 7-5, 4-6, 7-6 (8-6) victory over Sam Gould to secure the victory for the Aztecs. The Long Beach, Calif. native also notched a win at No. 3 doubles, pairing with Thorsten Bertsch to down the duo of Mika DeCoster and Jacob Jung, 8-6.

Following the win, the Aztecs moved up 11 spots in the most recent ITA Team Rankings to No. 63.

Siddiqui, who shared the weekly award with Boise State's Andy Bettles, will return to action with SDSU on Thursday, Feb. 9, as the team travels to Los Angeles, Calif., for a match against No. 8 UCLA. First serve is set for 2 p.m. PT.
