The Air Force men’s tennis team returns home for a pair of matches this weekend. Air Force (3-1) will host Portland State on Saturday, Feb. 11 and Northern Arizona on Sunday, Feb. 12. Both matches will begin at 10 a.m.
Air Force head coach Dan Oosterhous is in his third season as the men’s tennis coach after being named the program’s 12th head coach on October 1, 2009. Oosterhous, a 1993 graduate of the Academy, replaced legendary head coach Rich Gugat, who retired after 36 years at the helm of the men’s tennis program.
Oosterhous led the Falcons to a 10-14 record last season and has a 23-28 career mark. Last season, he coached the Falcons to a 6-1 victory over service-academy rival Army and Lance Wilhelm and Andy Jackson to a No. 7 doubles ranking in the Mountain Region. Wilhelm is currently ranked 17th in the Mountain Region in singles.
The Falcons split a pair of 4-3 matches a couple of weeks ago in Wichita, Kansas. Air Force rallied from losing the doubles point to Texas-San Antonio and won four of the six singles matches to post a 4-3 victory. Wilhelm (No. 1), Alex Grubbs (No. 4), Ali Rizvi (No. 5) and Alex Lineberry (No. 6) each won, with Rizvi winning in three sets and Lineberry winning the deciding match.
The next day, the Falcons won the doubles point against Wichita State, but lost four of the six singles matches. Freshman Landon Kinseypulled out an impressive three-set win at No. 3, defeating Tomislav Gregurovic, 6-2, 4-6, 7-5, while Lineberry again won the No. 6 match over Kester Black, 2-6, 7-6, (10-8).
Air Force travels to Dayton, Ohio for three matches. The Falcons will play Lipscomb and Ball State on Saturday, Feb. 18, then battle service-academy rival Army on Sunday, Feb. 19.
