Mountain West Announces Men's and Women's Tennis Players of the Week

San Diego State’s Thorsten Bertsch and TCU’s Nick Chappell have been selected as the Mountain West Co-Men’s Tennis Players of the Week, while Boise State’s Marlena Pietzuch has been named the MW Women’s Tennis Player of the Week.

Hailing from Mannheim, Germany, Bertsch went a combined 3-1 last week against No. 8 UCLA (L, 0-7) and Oklahoma State (W, 5-2). In Thursday’s match against the Bruins, Bertsch and teammate Derek Siddiqui notched a 8-7(5) victory over the tandem of Alex Brigham and Marcos Giron at the No. 2 doubles position, before Bertsch fell to Giron, 2-6, 6-4, 11-9, at the third singles position. Bertsch returned to the court on Saturday and recorded two wins against the Cowboys. After pairing with Siddiqui to defeat Brandon Champagne and Adolfo Aires, 8-0, Bertsch went on to upset 77th-ranked Chris Haworth, 2-6, 6-4, 6-4 at the No. 3 singles spot.

Chappell, from Indianapolis, Ind., went 3-0 last weekend against No. 22 Texas Tech (L, 2-5) and No. 49 Santa Clara (L, 3-4), going 2-0 in singles action and 1-0 in doubles competition. The freshman teamed up with his brother, Paul Chappell, to clinch the doubles point against the Red Raiders, earning a 9-8 (5) decision over Gonzalo Escobar and Vitor Manzini at the No. 2 doubles position. Chappell followed by netting a come-from-behind 2-6, 6-4, 6-4 victory over Texas Tech’s Raony Carvalho at the top of the singles lineup. Chappell returned to action on Sunday and collected a 3-6, 7-6 (5), 6-3 win at the top singles position against Santa Clara’s Kyle Dandan.

Pietzuch, a product of Hechingen, Germany, went a combined 4-0 last weekend to help propel Boise State to home victories over Eastern Washington (W, 7-0) and Idaho (W, 5-2), respectively. Pietzuch began Friday’s dual match against Eastern Washington by teaming with her sister, Manuela Pietzuch, to knock off the tandem of Moria Hedberg and Chrissy Uriarte, 8-1. The junior went on to post a victory in singles action, notching a 6-2, 6-2 win over Chelsea Patton at the No. 2 position. Against rival Idaho, Pietzuch played at the No. 1 singles position for the first time his season, netting a 7-5, 6-2 victory over Victoria Lozano. Earlier in the match, Pietzuch and her sister, Manuela, downed the pair of Lozano and Beatriz Florez, 8-4.
