Feb. 16, 2012
SAN DIEGO - The No. 63 San Diego State men's tennis team returns home Saturday for the first time since its season opener on Jan. 22. The Aztecs will be looking to pick up their fifth win of the 2012 dual-match season when they face off against San Francisco. The non-conference tilt is set for a 10 a.m. PT start at Aztec Tennis Center.
The Aztecs (4-1) are coming off a week where they had a tough loss to No. 8 UCLA, before picking up the win against Oklahoma State. The Mountain West Co-Men's Tennis Player of the Week, Thorsten Bertsch, led the team as he went a combined 3-1 in both contests.
The native of Mannheim, Germany, recorded two wins in SDSU's 5-2 victory against the Cowboys on Saturday in Las Vegas. After pairing with teammate Derek Siddiqui to defeat Brandon Champagne and Adolfo Aires, 8-0, Bertsch went on to upset No. 77 Chris Haworth, 2-6, 6-4, 6-4. In Thursday's match against the Bruins, Bertsch and teammate Siddiqui also notched a win, as they earned an 8-7 (5) victory over the tandem of Alex Brigham and Marcos Giron.
The Dons, meanwhile, are 1-5 on the season and are coming of a 6-0 loss to No. 54 Cal Poly. The teams did not compete in doubles due to darkness.
San Diego State is in search of its second all-time win against San Francisco after last year's contest was postponed. The last time the Aztecs and Dons faced was on Feb. 8, 2004, with the Scarlet and Black earning a 7-0 victory in San Diego.
After its clash with USF, the Aztecs will make the trip north to Los Angeles, Calif., as they are set to face No. 1 USC at 1 p.m. PT on Feb. 24.
