Air Force hosts former Mountain West opponent BYU on Thursday, Feb. 23 at 4 p.m. The match will be played on AFA's indoor courts located insinde the Cadet Gymnasium. The team will give away 150 Air Force tennis T-shirts in between the doubles and singles matches.
Air Force head coach Dan Oosterhous is in his third season as the men's tennis coach after being named the program's 12th head coach on October 1, 2009. Oosterhous, a 1993 graduate of the Academy, replaced legendary head coach Rich Gugat, who retired after 36 years at the helm of the men's tennis program.
Oosterhous led the Falcons to a 10-14 record last season and has a 25-31 career mark. Last season, he coached the Falcons to a 6-1 victory over service-academy rival Army and Lance Wilhelm and Andy Jackson to a No. 7 doubles ranking in the Mountain Region. Wilhelm is currently ranked 17th in the Mountain Region in singles.
The Falcons dropped three matches in Dayton, Ohio, last weekend. Air Force fell to 5-4 this season with losses to Lipscomb (4-3), Ball State (6-1) and service-academy rival Army (4-3). The Falcons were led by sophomre Alex Grubbs, who won all three of his matches at the No. 4 singles spot and two of his three doubles matches with fellow sophomore Andy Jackson at the No. 2 position.
Junior Lance Wilhelm won two of his singles matches at the No. 1 position, defeating Oliver Strecker of Lipscomb, 6-4, 6-4 and Asika Isoh of Army, 3-6, 6-2, 6-3. He also teamed with freshman Grant Taylor to win two matches at No. 1 doubles.
Air Force takes a couple of weeks off before entertaining Mountain West foe UNLV at the Academy on Saturday, March 3. The match is scheduled to begin at 10 a.m.
