Men's Tennis Set for Challenging Doubleheader

Feb. 27, 2013

SAN DIEGO - The No. 48 San Diego State Men's Tennis team faces perhaps its biggest challenge of the season on Thursday, as the Aztecs play host to both No. 16 Cal and No. 12 Pepperdine in a doubleheader at Aztec Tennis Center. SDSU will start the day against Cal at 9:30 a.m. PT, while the match against Pepperdine is scheduled for 1 p.m. PT.

The Aztecs are riding a three-match winning streak, including a victory over Mountain West foe Boise State, 5-2, at home on Saturday. SDSU's No. 48 ranking is its highest of the season, as the Aztecs were ranked No. 70 in last week's poll.

Senior Derek Siddiqui is now ranked No. 71 in singles, the highest ranking for any Aztec this season. Siddiqui was ranked No. 104 in the Feb. 12 poll, but has won five-straight singles matches after knocking off No. 27 Andrew Bettles of Boise State last week. In addition, junior Hunter Nicholas has won four-consecutive singles matches.

Cal is 5-4 this dual season and is coming off a victory over rival Stanford, 5-2, on Sunday. The Golden Bears are led by four ranked singles players, including No. 34 Christoffer Konigsfeldt, No. 56 Ben McLachlan, No. 69 Campbell Johnson and No. 117 Chase Melton. In doubles play, Cal's duo of Konigsfeldt and Johnson is ranked No. 18, while the team of Ben and Riki McLachlan is ranked No. 46.

Pepperdine is 8-2 this season after consecutive road victories over TCU, 5-2, on Tuesday and Florida State, 5-2, on Sunday. Senior Sebastian Fanselow is the No. 7-ranked singles player in the nation entering this week, while No. 73 Alex Sarkissian, No. 83 Finn Tearney and No. 87 Francis Alcantara also present big tests for the Aztecs. In doubles action, the Waves' unit of Alcantara and Tearney is ranked No. 27.

In addition to Thursday's doubleheader, the Aztecs are competing in the Pacific Coast Doubles Tournament throughout this weekend in La Jolla, Calif. SDSU is scheduled to play one doubles match in the tournament on Thursday night.
