Feb. 27, 2013
COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. - Sophomore Thorsten Bertsch (Mannheim, Germany) has been named Mountain West Player of the Week, the conference announced on Wednesday. Bertsch joins senior Derek Siddiqui and junior Hunter Nicholas as the third Aztec to win the award this season. It is the second-straight week an Aztec has been honored, after Nicholas was selected on Feb. 20. No. 48 SDSU is the only school with three players honored this year.
Bertsch went a combined 2-0 last week as the Aztecs defeated MW rival No. 39 Boise State, 5-2, on Feb. 23. Playing at No. 2 singles, Bertsch defeated the Broncos' Nathan Sereke, 7-6 (3), 6-4) to seal the match victory for SDSU. In No. 1 doubles action, Bertsch and Nicholas topped Boise State's duo of Sereke and Andrew Bettles, 8-2.
Bertsch is 6-2 overall in singles play this season, 6-1 in the No. 2 slot, and has won two-consecutive singles matches. Bertsch and Nicholas have a 3-5 record in doubles action, all in the No. 1 position. One of Bertsch's singles losses is against a ranked opponent, while two of his defeats in doubles have come against ranked teams.
The Aztecs (7-3, 2-0 MW) return to action on Thursday, Feb. 28, in a challenging doubleheader against No. 16 California and No. 12 Pepperdine. SDSU will face Cal in the first match, beginning at 9:30 a.m. PT, while its match against Pepperdine is scheduled for 1 p.m. PT. The Aztecs will also compete in the Pacific Coast Doubles Tournament this weekend, starting on Thursday in La Jolla, Calif.
