March 6, 2013

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. - Sophomore Thorsten Bertsch (Mannheim, Germany) has been named Mountain West Player of the Week, the conference announced on Wednesday. It is the second-consecutive week Bertsch has earned the honor, and third-straight week an Aztec has won it.

Bertsch went 4-1 overall in three matches last week playing at the No. 2 singles and No. 1 doubles positions, as the Aztecs finished 2-1. The sophomore upset No. 34 Christoffer Konigsfeldt of California, 6-2, 1-6, 6-3, to force a doubles-play tiebreaker, then teamed with partner Hunter Nicholas to take down Cal's No. 18-ranked duo of Konigsfeldt and Campbell Johnson, 9-8 (5) to help clinch the match victory, 4-3.

Bertsch stayed hot on Tuesday going 2-0, as the Aztecs defeated Central Florida, 4-3. First, he and Nicholas topped UCF's No. 1 team of Matthew Gladstone and Pedro Wagner, 8-4. In singles play, Bertsch knocked off Amar Hromic, 6-1, 7-6 (2), in the No. 2 slot. The sophomore is now 8-3 in singles play this season.

SDSU (9-4, 2-0 MW) returns to action on Saturday, as the Aztecs hit the road to face UC Santa Barbara on Saturday and take on Utah on Sunday.
