March 7, 2012
COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. - UNLV's Charlie Alvarado has been selected as the Mountain West Men's Player of the Week, while TCU's Federica Denti has been named the MW Women's Tennis Player of the Week.
Hailing from Costa Mesa, Calif., Alvarado helped propel UNLV to a 4-3 victory over Air Force last Saturday in Colorado Springs, Colo. In the first Conference match of the season, Alvarado rallied to pull off a come-from-behind victory over Alex Linberry at the No. 5 singles position. Down 5-2 in the third and decisive set, Alvarado rallied to win five consecutive games against Lineberry to take the match 4-6, 7-6, 7-5. Alvarado's victory helped the Rebels snap a six-game losing streak and pick up their first road victory of the 2012 season.
Denti, a native of Bellano, Italy, went a combined 5-1 last week to help 49th-ranked TCU go 2-1 against No. 28 Texas A&M (L, 1-6), UT Arlington (W, 6-1) and No. 55 Princeton (W, 5-2). She tallied a 3-0 mark on the week in singles, including scoring TCU's lone point in last Monday's loss to Texas A&M. Denti dropped only one set all week in singles action and won straight-set matches against UT Arlington and Princeton, respectively. In doubles, Denti and teammates Kelsey Sundaram went 2-1 on the week with their lone loss coming by way of tiebreaker against the Texas A&M duo of Janelle Cuthberston and Nazari Urbina, 9-8 (5).
