'Dogs Set For First MW Road Trip

FRESNO, Calif. --- The Fresno State men's tennis team is set to hit the road for the first time in the Mountain West this weekend. The Bulldogs travel to Colorado Springs, Colo. on Friday to face Air Force at 1 p.m. PT, and then continue the road trip to Albuquerque, N.M. to take on New Mexico at 10 a.m. PT Sunday.
About the Competition
Air Force sits just behind Fresno State in the Mountain West standings after dropping its one and only conference match so far to UNLV. The Falcons have won two straight and have already recorded 10 wins on the season. Fresno State and Air Force have met only three times in history with all three matches ending in a 7-0 final score in favor of the Bulldogs with the most recent match coming in 1996.
New Mexico sits in a tie in the MW with Air Force behind the Bulldogs after being swept 7-0 by Boise State in the first conference match. The Lobos are one win shy of ten wins on the season, but have dropped three of the last four matches.
Last Time Out
Fresno State is coming off its first-ever Mountain West conference match as the 'Dogs defeated Nevada 4-3 at the Wathen Tennis Center. The Bulldogs won the doubles point with wins at No. 1 and No. 3, then followed that with three singles wins from Nikolas Papic, Sai Kartik Nakireddi and Felipe Fritz. Fritz clinched the win for the 'Dogs as the overall score was tied at 3-3 and he battled back from dropping the first set in a tiebreaker.
Fritz on Fire
Freshman Felipe Fritz has been a hot spot in the Bulldogs lineup as he has won eight out of his last nine singles matches. Four of the wins have come in three sets including his most recent win in which he clinched the match for Fresno State over Nevada at No. 2. Against Purdue, Fritz made his first appearance in the top half of the line up at No. 3 where he won a very tight match 7-5, 6-4. He then moved up another spot in the line up to No. 2 against Iowa and Willamette where he picked up two wins. Against Iowa, Fritz defeated his opponent, who stood six foot and eight inches, in a come from behind second set tiebreaker.

The men's tennis team recorded its first Sysco Student-Athlete of the Week after Felipe Fritz recorded to clinching wins in the 'Dogs first ever MW win over Nevada.
