Men's Tennis Plays Host to UC Irvine on Wednesday
April 9, 2013
SAN DIEGO - The No. 42 San Diego State Men's Tennis team takes on UC Irvine on Wednesday, April 10, beginning at 3 p.m. PT at Aztec Tennis Center. The match was originally scheduled as the first half of a doubleheader on Friday, but has since been changed to Wednesday.
The Aztecs are coming off a sweep of No. 56 Santa Clara, 7-0, on April 5, and have won two of their last three dual matches. This will be SDSU's final non-conference match of the season, as it plays host to Air Force on Friday.
Sophomore Thorsten Bertsch has climbed back into the singles rankings this week, coming in at No. 108, just one spot ahead of senior teammate No. 109 Derek Siddiqui. Bertsch has won seven of his last nine singles matches, including a win over No. 63 John Lamble of Santa Clara in the No. 1 slot last week. It was Bertsch's first No. 1 singles victory this season.
Meanwhile, Siddiqui bounced back from a tough stretch to knock off Ilya Osintsev, 6-2, 6-2, to snap a four-match losing skid. In addition, Siddiqui and Bertsch have teamed up in No. 2 doubles play in each of the past two matches, and are 2-0.
UC Irvine is 5-15 this season, but is coming off consecutive wins against Cal Poly and UC Santa Barbara. The Aztecs held off the Anteaters, 4-3, last season in Irvine.
