April 10, 2013

LAS VEGAS (UNLVRebels.com) - UNLV tennis sophomore Ace Matias was named Mountain West Player of the Week for the second straight week and third time this season, the league announced Wednesday.

Playing at the No. 1 position in the lineup, the native of Torrance, Calif., helped UNLV to road victories over New Mexico on Friday and Air Force on Sunday. He improved to 4-0 in singles vs. MW opponents with a 6-2, 6-3 win over the Lobos' Samir Lftikhar and a 6-4, 6-4 upset of then-75th-ranked Lance Wilhelm of the Falcons. Matias also split two doubles matches at the top spot with partner Bernard Schoeman.

A transfer from Utah, Matias improved to 22-7 on the season, including a sizzling 17-3 in dual matches. For his efforts, he earned his first career national ranking, finally breaking in at No. 113 this week. He is the first Rebel to earn back-to-back MW honors since the late Mehdi Bouras in February 2011.

The 59th-ranked Rebels (15-5/3-1) will host No. 46 Boise State (14-8/2-1) on Friday starting with doubles play at noon. Admission to all matches at the Fertitta Tennis Complex is free of charge.
