Mountain West Announces Men's and Women's Tennis Players of the Week

New Mexico senior Carl Ho has been selected as the Mountain West Men's Tennis Player of the Week, while TCU junior Olivia Smith has been named MW Women’s Tennis Player of the Week.

A native of Richmond, British Columbia, Ho went a combined 6-0 last week as No. 61 New Mexico posted a 2-1 record against No. 58 San Diego State (L, 3-4), UNLV (W, 6-1) and Hawai’i (W, 7-0). Ho began the week by pulling out a 6-3, 4-6, 6-3 victory over the Aztecs’ Spencer Simon at the No. 6 singles position. He went on to post singles victories over the Rebels’ Bernard Schoeman (7-6, 6-3) and the Warriors’ Danilo Casanova (6-3, 6-2) at the sixth spot in the lineup. At the third doubles position, Ho and partner James Hignett recorded three consecutive victories, notching wins over SDSU’s Rickey Baylon/Spencer (8-6), UNLV’s Charlie Alvarado/Rene Ruegamer (8-1) and Hawaii’s Charlie Rice/Chas Okamoto (8-4), respectively.

Smith, a product of Bath, England, went 4-0 last weekend to help 38th-ranked TCU secure victories over No. 64 Wyoming (W, 5-2) and Colorado State (W, 6-1), respectively. Against the Cowgirls, Smith paired with Millie Nichols to post a victory over the 54th-ranked doubles duo of Veronica Popovici and Simona Synkova, 8-4, at the No. 1 position. Later, Smith followed her winning performance with a singles victory, downing Wyoming’s Alexandra Kovacs, 6-2, 6-0, at the No. 3 spot. The next day against Colorado State, Smith duplicated her effort as she and Nichols notched an 8-2 win over Tori Arneson and Kaley Schultz at the No. 1 position. Then in singles, Smith moved up to the No. 1 position, defeating Arneson, 6-1, 6-2, to help the Horned Frogs move to 6-0 in MW play.
