Falcons Head to West Coast for Two Matches

The Air Force men’s tennis team hits the road this weekend for a pair of Mountain West matches. The Falcons will play at 42nd-ranked San Diego State on Friday, April 12 at 4 p.m., and at Nevada on Sunday, April 14 at 10 a.m.
LAST TIME OUT
The Falcons lost a piar of league matches at home last weekend, falling to Fresno State, 4-3, and No. 64 UNLV, 7-0. Air Force is now 10-9 overall and 0-3 in the Mountain West this season.
Fresno State jumped out to a 1-0 lead with wins at the Nos. 2 and 3 doubles spots. The Falcons’ No. 1 team of senior Lance Wilhelm and sophomore Grant Taylor posted an 8-4 victory over Reid deLaubenfels and Sam McNeil.
DeLaubenfels put the Bulldogs ahead 2-0 by defeating Air Force junior Steven Young, 6-1, 6-3 at the No. 2 singles spot, but the Falcons won the next three matches to take a 3-2 lead. Taylor defeated Nikolas Papic, 7-6, 6-4, at No. 4, junior Alex Grubbs rallied to beat Sai Kartik, 1-6, 7-5, 6-2 at No. 3 and freshman Jack McCullers downed Jeremy Quiroz, 3-6, 6-4, 7-5 at No. 6. McNeil evened the match at 3-all with a 7-6, 6-4 victory over freshman Andrew Parks at No. 5, setting up the No. 1 contest to decide the team match. Wilhelm, ranked 75th in the country, rallied from losing the first set to Felipe Fritz, 7-5, to win the second, 6-4, but lost the third 6-4.
Wilhelm and Taylor also won the No. 1 doubles match against UNLV to improve to 14-5 overall and 2-1 in league play with a 9-7 victory over Ace Matias and Bernard Schoeman. UNLV won all six singles matches.
WILHELM STILL IN NATIONAL RANKINGS
Air Force senior Lance Wilhelm received his first national ranking on Feb. 12, entering the ITA Division I Men’s Singles rankings at No. 85. Wilhelm, from Gig Harbor, Wash., is the first Air Force men’s player to receive a national singles ranking since Shannon Buck in 2006. He is currently No. 86.
Air Force plays its final two matches of the regular season next week at the Academy. The Falcons will host Utah State on Thursday, April 18 at 1 p.m., and New Mexico on Sunday, April 21 at 12 p.m.
