The Air Force men’s tennis team plays its final regular season match of the season on Sunday, April 22 against Colorado College at the Academy. The match is scheduled to begin at 10 a.m.
Air Force head coach Dan Oosterhous is in his third season as the men’s tennis coach after being named the program’s 12th head coach on October 1, 2009. Oosterhous, a 1993 graduate of the Academy, replaced legendary head coach Rich Gugat, who retired after 36 years at the helm of the men’s tennis program.
Oosterhous led the Falcons to a 10-14 record last season and has a 30-39 career mark. Last season, he coached the Falcons to a 6-1 victory over service-academy rival Army and Lance Wilhelm and Andy Jackson to a No. 7 doubles ranking in the Mountain Region. Wilhelm is currently ranked 17th in the Mountain Region in singles.
The Falcons went 1-2 in Texas last week, defeating Lamar Univeristy, 4-3, and losing to UT-Arlington (5-2) and TCU (7-0). Sophomore Alex Grubbs won three of his six matches, including both the No. 2 singles and No. 2 doubles matches against Lamar. Lance Wilhelm won the No. 1 singles match against Lamar and Steven Young won at No. 6 after the Falcons also won at No. 3 doubles to take the doubles point.
Young also posted a win at No. 4 singles over UT-Arlington while freshman Joey Brandt won the No. 6 match. Grubbs and Andy Jackson won at No. 2 doubles.
Senior Michael Tope will be honored in a pre-match ceremony prior to Sunday’s match.
Air Force travels to San Diego for the 2012 Mountain West Championships beginning on Friday, April 27.
