Men's Tennis Earns No. 1 Seed in MW Tourney

SAN DIEGO - The No. 40 San Diego State Men's Tennis team begins Mountain West Championship play on Saturday, April 27, at USAF Academy, Colo., beginning at 2 p.m. MT.

The Aztecs won the MW regular season championship and earned the No. 1 overall seed in this weekend's tournament, and will face the winner of Thursday's first-round match between No. 4 New Mexico and No. 5 Fresno State. SDSU defeated New Mexico, 4-3, on April 14, while the Aztecs topped Fresno State, 4-2, on Feb. 8.

SDSU (18-7, 6-0 MW) clinched the MW regular season championship outright on Sunday, defeating Nevada, 4-3. The Aztecs have won five-consecutive dual matches and six of their last seven. It's the program's first regular season MW title since 2007, while SDSU looks to win its first MW Tournament title since 2005.

Senior Derek Siddiqui will enter the tournament on a high note after winning his last three singles matches. Siddiqui has a team-high five conference singles victories this season and has three victories over nationally-ranked opponents. The senior also led the team with 14 wins in doubles play this dual season.

Sophomore Thorsten Bertsch finished the dual season with a 16-5 singles record and 4-1 mark in MW play. Bertsch has won seven of his last nine singles matches, is 3-2 against ranked opponents, and is 14-2 in the No. 2 singles slot. In addition, junior Hunter Nicholas concluded dual-match play with a 15-8 singles record, with 14 wins coming in the No. 3 singles spot.
