M. Tennis' Bertsch Named MW Player of the Week
April 24, 2013
COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. - Sophomore Thorsten Bertsch (Mannheim, Germany) has been named Men's Tennis' Mountain West Player of the Week, the conference announced on Wednesday. It's the fifth time an Aztec has received the award this season, and third time this season for Bertsch.
Bertsch went 2-0 overall in Sunday's 4-3 victory over Nevada, which clinched the MW regular season championship for SDSU, as well as the No. 1-seed in this week's MW Tournament. The sophomore defeated Quentin Mege, 6-4, 6-1, in No. 2 singles play, and teamed up with junior Hunter Nicholas to knock off Nevada's duo of Andrew Poustie and Fernando Sunago, 8-4, in No. 1 doubles action.
This dual season, Bertsch has a 16-5 record in singles play, with a 14-2 mark in the No. 2 singles slot, and has won seven of his last nine singles matches. He has a 4-1 mark in conference play, and a 3-2 record against nationally-ranked opponents. Bertsch has a 10-10 record in doubles play this dual season, and has won four-straight doubles matches.
The Aztecs begin MW Tournament play on Saturday, April 27, at USAF Academy, Colo., beginning at 2 p.m. MT. They will face the winner of Thursday's first-round match between No. 4 New Mexico and No. 5 Fresno State.
