Mountain West Announces Men's and Women's Tennis Players of the Week

Air Force sophomore Alex Grubbs has been selected as the Mountain West Men's Tennis Player of the Week, while Wyoming sophomore Veronica Popovici has been named MW Women’s Tennis Player of the Week.
Grubbs, a native of Fort Worth, Texas, went a combined 2-0 last week as Air Force concluded its regular-season slate with a 7-0 victory over Colorado College in Colorado Springs, Colo. Positioned at the No. 2 singles position, Grubbs downed Will Lindsay in straight sets (6-0, 6-0), after teaming with Michael Tope to knock off Robert Kasemodel and Zach White, 8-5, at the No. 3 doubles spot. Grubbs leads the Falcons with 29 combined dual match wins this season, the most by an Air Force student-athlete since Shannon Buck posted 32 victories in 2006.
Popovici, from Piatra Neamt, Romania, went 2-0 last weekend as Wyoming closed out the regular season with a 5-2 victory over Air Force in Colorado Springs, Colo. Positioned at the top of the singles lineup, Popovici earned the third point of the day for the Cowgirls with a straight set win (6-0, 6-2) over Melissa Cecil. Earlier in the dual, Popovici and teammate Simona Synkova rallied from a 4-1 deficit against Cecil and Tahlia Smoke, winning seven of the next nine games to win the match, 8-6, at the No. 1 doubles spot.
