Rebel Tennis Make Coaches Challenge Visit

May 6, 2013

LAS VEGAS ( - UNLV men's tennis head coach Owen Hambrook and assistant James Wilson were joined by players Gilard Berman and Willie Sublette in visiting Steve Schorr Elementary School on May 1.

The event marked the first of four visits to the winning classrooms of the UNLV Coaches Challenge (program targeting youth health and wellness). The Rebel tennis foursome interacted with Mr. Goldberg's victorious third grade class.

Clark County School District elementary school children from several schools took the message to heart and won the 6th annual UNLV Coaches Challenge, a collaborative program that encourages grade-school children to choose healthy food and participate in physical activity.

A UNLV head coach will visit each winning classroom throughout May to congratulate the students for their efforts and to encourage them to make healthy choices and to be physically active. For information about the annual Coaches Challenge or tips about adopting healthy lifestyle tips, visit or call the Southern Nevada Health District's office of chronic disease prevention and health promotion, (702) 759-1270.

This year's Coaches Challenge included more than 13,000 elementary school children from 112 schools. Participating classes collectively earned a total of 182,966 points, which is the most since the program began in 2007. Each point equals a serving of fruit or vegetables or 15 minutes of physical activity.
