May 15, 2013

Colorado Springs, Colo. --- Jadon Phillips, a senior from Macon, Georgia and an All-Mountain West selection, was named the Mountain Region winners of the Arthur Ashe Leadership & Sportsmanship Award. The award was one of eight earned by Mountain West student-athletes as the Intercollegiate Tennis Association announced its regional awards on Wednesday.

Phillips is the second straight Lobo to win the men's Arthur Ashe Award, following his teammate Carl Ho, who won it last year. Air Force's Hannah Drake was the women's recipient of the honor.

The award is given to the male and female player in each region who exhibited outstanding sportsmanship and leadership as well as scholastic, extracurricular and tennis achievements. Phillips primarily played the No. 1 singles position for the Lobos, and was 20-14 overall, and 16-10 in dual matches. He went 6-3 at No. 1 singles, and he was 15-14 in doubles. He was named All-Mountain West for the fourth straight year.

"It's a leadership award and there were quite a few seniors in our region who were very deserving, but Jadon definitely deserved it," said Associate Head Coach Bart Scott. "Not only does he compete with pride and passion, but he does it with humility, plus a sense of respect towards his opponent, the other teams, and the coaches. He's very deserving."

Phillips helped the Lobos to the finals of the Mountain West Tournament for a second straight season.
