May 17, 2012

SAN DIEGO - Former San Diego State men's tennis player Javier Pulgar recently earned the ITA Southwest Region Arthur Ashe Leadership & Sportsmanship Award. Pulgar is now a finalist for the national honor and this marks the first time an Aztec has earned the recognition.

SDSU was lead by Pulgar at No. 1 singles this season as he posted a 12-9 record in dual match play, including two wins against nationally ranked opponents. The Mountain West Player of the Year ended conference action on a three-match winning streak against New Mexico, TCU and UNLV. His biggest win in league play was a 6-7, 6-2, 6-4 victory over Freshman of the Year Nick Chappell from TCU. Pulgar was ranked No. 116 in the ITA rankings released on May 8.

The ITA/Arthur Ashe Leadership and Sportsmanship Award recognizes outstanding individuals in all divisions at the regional and national level. In August the national winners are honored during a special ceremony hosted by the USTA during Arthur Ashe Kids' Day inside Ashe Stadium. This award which dates back to 1982, goes to NCAA Divisions I, II and III, NAIA and JuCo men's and women's players who have exhibited outstanding sportsmanship and leadership as well as scholastic, extracurricular and tennis achievements.
